Theatrum S. Casimiri (1604) – and the Onset of the Baroque in Lithuania
On the occasion of the canonization festivities of Saint Casimir in Vilnius in 1604, a comprehensive publication titled Theatrum S. Casimiri was issued. Printed at the Vilnius Academy press, this work cannot be attributed solely to the Jesuits; rather, it was the result of efforts by numerous contributors and authors. Alongside the Jesuits and the Jesuit-led Vilnius Academy, significant credit for its preparation belongs to the canon of Vilnius Cathedral, Gregorius Swięcicius (Grigalius Svencickis, Grzegorz Święcicki), who brought the papal breve from Rome and composed a hagiographic account of Saint Casimir’s life.
